"La Fura dels Baus" – our Spacenet as the backdrop for an opera
This year’s Wiener Festwochen witnessed a very special production: the members of the Wiener Taschenoper performed Iannis Xenakis' opera "Oresteia" on three successive days. Carlus Padrissa, the founder and motivator of the Catalan theatre company "La Fura dels Baus", was responsible for the artistic concept. The central elements of this opera based on Aeschylus' classic Greek tragedy were "fire" and "water".
The backdrop for this impressive production was the famous Karlsplatz in Vienna. Roland Olbeter, who was responsible for the stage design, chose the elliptical pond in front of the Karlskirche as the opera's centrepiece. A mound of earth was piled up at the rear and a "tree" of ropes – our Large Spacenet – stood tall in the middle of the water. And our Spacenet actually became the stage: one of the actors climbed to the top of the net and, enveloped in an aureola, balanced there like Christ the Redeemer. This climbing "into the air" proved to be the perfect complement to the opera's theme of the four basic elements. And at the end of the performance, the Spacenet was even full of children: the singing and climbing members of the children's choir of the Viennese school HIB Wien 3 provided the soothing finale.
Corocord is always happy to support artistic projects. Therefore, we did not think twice before lending our Spacenet to the Wiener Festwochen free of charge.
All the performances in May 2011 proved to be real crowd pullers – and Roland Olbeter is now planning to stage further performances of this opera. If it is logistically possible, we will gladly allow our Spacenet to accompany him.
